인간, 동물의 장기, 기관의 형태로부터 시작되는 패브릭 조각을 만드는 우한나 작가의 작품 중 ‘복부’ 시리즈는 인지하지 못했던 작가 자신의 장기의 ‘부재’를 인지하며 느낀 결핍과 상실의 감정에서 출발한다. 장기의 형태를 이어받은 조각은 부재하는 존재를 대신하며 동시에 상실을 보완하고, 소유욕을 만족시킨다. 이러한 갈망과 소유욕은 가지지 못 한 것, 가질 수 없는 것에 몰두하게 하고, 나아가 자신에게 없는 것이 아닌 그저 자신과 다른 것임을 이해하는 것으로 확장한다. 작가의 작품은 이어지는 ‘백 위드 유’ 시리즈를 통해 인간의 장기를 너머 인간에게는 없는 아가미, 부레 그리고 꼬리 등을 부착하고 휴대하며 현재의 고정된 신체, 정체성을 뛰어넘을 수 있는 존재에 대한 상상으로 진화한다. 작가는 다른 존재의 기관을 빌어 현재의 유한한 육체, 고정된 신체 개념을 초월한, 인간을 모든 타자와 구분 지었던 기존의 이분법적인 경계에서 벗어나 다른 존재와의 수평적인 관계를 도모한다.

우한나(B.1988)는 한국예술종합학교 미술원 조형예술과 예술사, 동대학원을 졸업하고, 2020년 송은아트큐브, 2019년 피에스 사루비아에서 개인전을 열었다. 〈Summer Love〉(송은아트센터, 2022),〈조각충동〉(서울시립북서울미술관, 2022),〈슈퍼히어로〉(인사미술공간, 2020),〈2020넥스트코드〉(대전시립미술관, 2020),〈두 번의 똑같은 밤은 없다〉(서울시립북서울미술관, 2019), 〈슈퍼퓨처푸드〉(아르코미술관, 2019),〈린킨아웃〉(일민미술관, 2019),〈LOTUS LAND〉(국립아시아문화전당, 2017)의 그룹전 및 아트플랜트아시아 2020 주제전〈토끼 방향 오브젝트〉에도 참여한 경력이 있다. 2015년 일현미술관의 트래블 그랜트, 2018년 및 2019년 서울문화재단 기금을 수혜했다.

Woo Hannah creates fabric sculptures shaped like the body parts and organs of humans and animals. Her series, ‘Abdomen,’ starts with the feelings of lack and loss she experienced when first realizing the ‘absence’ of one of her organs. The sculptures, which borrow the form of the missing organ, act as replacements, supplementing the loss and soothing the ache of desire. The sensation of longing and possessiveness causes Woo to immerse herself in what she cannot have and expands the understanding and acceptance of those different from her. She focuses not on what she does or does not have, but just on the fact that these differences exist. Through her following series, ‘Bag with you,’ the artist's work evolves into the fantasy of a being that can surpass the limits of their current body and identity by attaching and carrying body parts such as gills, air bladders, and tails—things that humans do not have. Through the act of borrowing non-human organs, the artist seeks to create an equal, horizontal relationship with other beings, breaking away from the dichotomous boundaries that distinguish humans from all others and transcending the current finite body and fixed ideas surrounding the human body.

Born in 1988 in Daejeon, Woo Hannah received a B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts, Korea National University of Arts. Solo exhibitions of her work have been organized at Songeun Art Cube (2020) and PS Sarubia (2019). Selected group exhibitions featuring her work include Summer Love, Songeun Art Center (2022); Sculpture Impulse, Buk-Seoul Museum of Art (2022); 2020 Next Code, Daejeon Museum of Art (2020); Nothing Twice, Buk-Seoul Museum of Art (2019); Super Future Food, ARKO Art Center (2019); Linkin-out, Ilmin Museum of Art (2019); and LOTUS LAND, Asia Culture Center (2017).  She received funding from the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture in 2018 and 2019, Travel Grant from Ilhyun Museum in 2015, and was a resident at the SeMA Nanji Residency in 2021. She lives and works in Seoul.
